Multimedia and Social Media
My biggest undertaking this year has been trying to make this publication more modern, and one of the ways to do that is by incorporating more multimedia and web elements. The biggest thing I've done is start a podcast, "For Your Consideration." This podcast focuses on issues and events that affect students and examining them more in-depth through interviews with those at the center of the issue. The biggest issue I've focused on is our school-wide fundraiser for the organization Ashley's Dream. I interviewed both one of Ashley's former teachers and her father.
I also wanted to make the visuals we posted more interactive, and the way I did this was my incorporating gifs into our online coverage. Here I have one I made when colored powder was released by the student section during halftime of a football game.
I'm the proudest of this gif not because of its beauty but because of the story behind it. This was the Homecoming football game, and that day, it was forty degrees, rainy and windy. My camera was in a plastic bag and kept shutting down. The fact that I was able to get this was worth all the shivering and ducking under a single-person umbrella with three other girls from yearbook.
For the Midterm election, I completed a large multimedia package giving students information on how to vote, where to vote, when to vote, a quiz on how to determine political affiliation and information on all the candidates. Also, I live-tweeted the results of the election.
