This year I oversaw the creation of both of our issues. Also, I was the driving force behind us becoming a magazine and taught the staff the mechanics of magazine design.

At the MIPA Summer Workshop, I wanted to make an introductory page for our first issue, and in my class Taking Your Newspaper to the Edge, I really pushed myself design-wise. The first things that's interesting about these pages is the differing number of columns on both pages. This was something I was apprehensive about initially, but I think it's the best part of the pages. My teacher also pushed me to play with the the gutter sizes on the left page in order to make the sidebars very distinct. I'm really happy with how this came out, and it was, in my opinion, our first step in becoming a magazine.

This is our in-depth spread from our first issue. I really enjoy minimalist, clean design, as you can probably tell from this website, and this spread let me put that desire into practice. I came up and designed this spread solo and initially it scared our design editor. The biggest risk we took with this spread is the headline. Headlines typically don't go at the bottom of the page, nor do subheads, but it really works in this spread. I also really love the symmetry with the two pie charts. This spread looks very clean and cohesive.

Finally, I designed this spread during my junior year. I had finished my spread early and was helping another staff member when this became my project. There are some very intricate details about this spread that make it unique: the color of the award matching the headline, sub-headline and text; the way that all the categories line up with each other perfectly. As stated before, I really like symmetry, and this spread is striking because of it.
